Resolution has more than tripled since HD to 4k and the tv people take advantage of this by cramming in more text and picture. I did a little googling and find “their” recommendation is for me to throw away my HD tv and buy a much larger 4k one to keep up with technology changes.
Hate to break it to you but… a bigger TV doesn’t help. We have an 80 inch screen and I have replayed and replayed scenes with displayed text and still can’t read it. Yes I have my eyes examined yearly.
What drives me nuts more than that is the bad audio mixing for Surround Sound in many shows and movies. Most of the time, you are getting nearly everything through the center speaker; about the only time you’re getting good “surround” audio is when there’s background music. It’s a shame too, because when it’s done right, it sounds wonderful…
Since I got my first HDTV (40") three years ago, I find it’s a little easier to read the fine print on some of the car and medicine commercials — but it really isn’t worth my time to do so.
This is a real thing. Was just watching Netflix and you were expected to read the text message at least 4 times in the show to understand what was going on. Funny part is, the director is just trying to convey real life.
we’ve been using CC for years now. Sometimes it is pretty funny with it Auto generating. Or you can see times the actor went off script. Or they include a noise we otherwise would have missed. Annoying when the text goes right into the middle of the screen though.
It’s annoying as heck when a program shows someone’s text messages or notes or anything that has to be squinted at to read, mostly because (with poor eyesight) I’m relying on listening more than watching. Most of the time CC doesn’t display such text either, and often the image is up for only a second or two. Makes me feel old. Well, older.

It’s CC OR picture, if I concentrate on one, I miss the other.

Yikes. I read too quickly and mistook an “X” for an “A.”
