A few years ago, I was going to go get a haircut. My wife said she used to cut her first husband’s hair and she would be glad to cut mine. You know where this is going: after several minutes of her cutting, she says, “I don’t think I remember how to do this like I used to.” Walmart’s stylist had an opening the next afternoon.
One Sunday evening a former girlfriend decided she wanted a new hairstyle, and I was to do the cutting. It took a while to get the hang of manipulating the comb, scissors and my fingers at the same time, but with her guidance her new do looked pretty good and she was happy. Then she told me that if nothing else, one of the other girls at the salon where she worked could have fixed it. Yes, she was a hair stylist.
When the pademic started my wife start doing my hair. She start looking at You Tube tutoring videos, (l call them You Tube Academy). Today she’s a very skillful barber, although she’s a medical doctor, she’s very proud of her work as a barber. Also she’s saving us 20 dollars. every month.
She’s retired, and moved away, but, my mother was, I believe the first licensed woman barber in the state. Suffice to say, I didn’t have to go far to get my hair cut.
I keep my hair long and it is straight. I wear it put up in a big plastic hair clip. (When I am my 18th century self for a reenactment I use a large metal barrette instead as it hides easier under my cap. When I need to cut my hair I put it in a ponytail, throw the ponytail over my head and clip off what I think should come off – if it is not straight it does not matter as no one sees my hair down except my husband.
When we started doing the reenacting husband let his hair grow and he wears it pulled in back in a pony tail (when reenacting it is referred to as a queue which is the period correct name). When his hair gets too long I cut it for him while it is in the queue – quick snip and off, but he then needs me to trim the sides in the front (which I don’t have) and to use his electric razor on the back of his neck.

Not much hair on my Plugger top, but the sides stick out when the hair gets a little long. And yes, I can still go to Hair Cuttery.

It was the pandemic that got us started with home barbering; but my wife won’t let me do her hair.

I cut my own hair and my wife’s. I also dye it when the mood strikes her.

Pluggers are real respectful to someone who will be very close to them with something sharp. Wives may forgive, but they NEVER forget.
