Ten years ago, Richard Thompson chose the strip shown today, as the finale for Cul de Sac, marking the end of its run in syndication. Fortunately we can still see his work in places such as this. http://richardspooralmanac.blogspot.com/2012/09/my-last-strip_23.html
Mr Thompson was making a good point, here: you have to bring a number of working assumptions to the task of understanding a comic strip. Or a movie, as when (something that happens frequently in films) a character is shown going through a door and then shown coming through the door, one and the same event but without “practice” it can be taken to be two. Or a medieval painting, which shows a “road” winding through a large landscape into the distance and St Whoozis depicted five or six times along the path, each representing an important event in the saint’s life (or rather the legend of his life).
One of my ways of learning to read was having a neighborhood friend read comics to me when I was very young. I started reading very young and have no intentions of slowing down. I taught my child that reading is magic.
Fiery, obstinate Alice gets totally red in the face insisting on her misinterpretation of what a comic strip is and how it works. She is depressing My Hero, Petey, willfully ignoring his attempts to read and interpret the cat-strip for her!
Therefore, I condemn her to “box” 6 of today’s eight….

Don’t lose hope, Petey. Alice is going to learn how to read soon and will be able to appreciate them.

Alice, you philistine.

It must be a Garfield comic, and Garfield is clearly smarter than Alice. Of course, they have something in common—neither one of them listens.

That little girl in the 6th box looks pretty dangerous. I bet that the girls and boys in the other boxes are glad that she can’t get at them.

Well, Petey, the comics are not going anywhere. Why? Because they are still relevant.

I thought she was going to threaten to rip the bandaid off her knee and get Petey to freak out again!

Comics will be around for a long time thanks to computers and drawing programs.
