    Washington was not a good man. He kept slaves his entire lifetime, only emancipating them at his death when he had no further use for them. And even most of them still didn’t get their freedom thanks to his family. Had he been a good man he would have freed them during his lifetime so that he could have been certain that they got their freedom.

    My, my, what a brilliant mind for a little girl. I can remember making these same questions and conclusions, but not till my junior high school years. And, I remember doing this mind exercise again in college, though I never managed to bend any spoons.

    Sally asks a good question. My answer is it depends on the teacher. Some actually do want you to write what you think. Sadly most just want you to regurgitate what they told you.

    Being able to actually write the words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”.

    And then go home and have dinner served to you by slaves is either the epitome of hypocrisy or a lack of self awareness that is not evident in any of the words that these men wrote. I don’t believe for a minute that anyone with a normal IQ could have believed that slavery was OK. They might have felt powerless to beat the system, and accepted the world they inherited. But, the words they wrote into the constitution prove that they never believed it was OK.

    My college years convinced me that to be a “good student” in the “soft” disciplines required that you write what fit the professor’s beliefs, no thinking required.

    Thankfully I was a math and science honor student and could take all those classes pass or fail.
