Those places are probably more of a “public square” than Facebrick or Tweeter. And like real public areas, if you try to make folks listen, they tend to move away and be annoyed.
A friend’s daughter was about to begin college when the pandemic hit. She has yet to step foot on her campus. The university just opened the campus to students but, due to a family illness, opted to not travel and be 4600 miles away if things got bad. I tease her that her degree is going to be from Bedroom University.
Jack in the Box was my study hall while I went to in law school outside of my research time. Had a big table to put all my study materials out. I bought my coffee from them and usually some food. Background music was good. Also, as I was a cop at the time, management appreciated me there for the added security of an off duty cop.
I wrote my PhD thesis at a Mexican restaurant and my DSocSci thesis at a Ruby Tuesday. Both are gone now. If I go for a third, I think I’ll stay out of restaurants.
