Some 15 years ago, I had gone around town looking to get my hair cut for a last minute gathering later that day. Pretty much every place that accepted walk-ins was full up or closed. I finally went to the place inside the local Walmart. There was no waiting, but it took 45 minutes for the lady to perform a fairly simple men’s cut. She wasn’t even an intern. She was the manager. I can see why the place didn’t last all that long. I certainly never went back.
When I was in high school, a group of us were talking about what we were going to do when we graduated. My friend J said that she wanted to be a hair stylist. One of the other said, “Great; you can be the one to give Karen a haircut.” J laughed & said, “I will NOT be the one to cut her hair!” (Even then I had thick, waist-length hair, as I do now). Fast forward a few years. I was 20 and decided to get a haircut for a change. The girl at the counter asked if I was just having a trim & I told her no: I wanted it cut right to the shoulders. I was seated & waited for my stylist when I heard a gasp. I turned around…my stylist was J! Almost 40 years later we’re still laughing about it.
Had I been Peter’s age, I may have said the same thing. The biggest cure for that behavior is insanely beautiful daughters. Wakes a person up to the downsides of it.
Once had a stylist like that. Mesmerized and tongue-tied the entire haircut. After she left, I went and found a barber shop where could cuss and talk sports and the like.
I grew up near the Ohio State University’s Barber College. In high school, I could choose between Freshman to Senior; Free to $4.00. There was a risk cheaping out, but sometimes you gamble!
Only once did I go to a place with “Stylists”. It was called “Gentlemen’s Quarters”, and I did get a pretty woman. But, as has been the case with every single haircut save one (really don’t know what happened there), I didn’t like the result. I now cut my own hair. I still don’t like it, but it’s convenient… and cheap. ☺
My last salon haircut had me going back to cutting my hair myself. Even the manager had a weird crackle to her voice when she took my money – I couldn’t tell if she was crying about her reputation or stifling a guffaw.
I remember when I was a late teen to mid- 20’s and I used to go to hair salons. I can still fondly recall pretty ladies pulling my head back to their chests and cutting my hair. Makes me wonder why I ever started cutting my own hair.

During the haircut, Peter could say “Could you stand in front of me with your tools behind me and then reach over and grab one of your tools?”

I doesn’t matter if the haircut is bad. He covers it with a ball cap all the time anyway.

Years ago in downtown Chicago by the Stock Exchange was a salon called The Mane Event where the stylists only wore teddies…..

We had a Barber School near where I lived. Their haircuts were cheap so they were always packed.

When confronted by two or more barbers, choose the one with the worst cut – the other guy is the one that did his.

I take it Peter isn’t the first male client handled by Suzette.
