Other human sources include biomass burning [e.g., factories, controlled fires, gas heaters, gas stoves], livestock farming, leaky pipelines, and waste management.
Naturally-produced methane is offset by natural sinks in air and soil. In the air, methane reacts with hydroxyl radicals, forming water and carbon dioxide. In the soil, bacteria (methanotrophs) use it as a source of carbon in a process called methane oxidation.
Human-associated methane production, however, increases the methane more quickly than can be offset by sinks. Preindustrial levels of methane in the atmosphere averaged around 600-700 parts per billion. By 2022 atmospheric methane had reached 1908.61 ppb.
Green-house gases work by absorbing infrared radiation (heat) and re-radiating it back to the earth where it heats things up. And, methane breaks down into H2O and CO2 — two other green-house gases, prolonging the process.
