As a nurse living in a smallish town, I occasionally ran into former patients in public places like the grocery store or the post office. Since I seldom recognized them healthy and out of context, I’d add to my apology, “I didn’t recognize you with your clothes on.”

As a retired paramedic I resemble that remark. I see a lot of people I don’t recognize because they are wearing clothes.

After a long separation, I met an old friend, much of whom I had never met. About 30 pounds, maybe.
