Yes, that heavy back end of bassets can be hard to control. Once it starts sliding off a chair or sofa, you can’t stop it. You just gotta slide. Land safely, though.
I don’t recall any of my dogs falling off the furniture. Of course, they usually had a safety device such as a human lap, or approximately 100 surrounding blankets, so they’d have had a hard time even getting near an edge! For the (human) bed, there was a bit of edge all around, plus a ramp hubby built so that they wouldn’t jump on or off.
