    In The Old Man And The Sea, Hemingway is making the point that being determined and never giving up indicates what kind of human being one is. The purpose of it is to inspire peoples to be determined and never give up, especially to never give up trying to draw Doug.

    Read it when I was a kid. It was serialized in the “Saturday Evening Post.” I didn’t care for it. I got the impression that Hemingway was not the kind of grownup I wanted to meet. My opinion hasn’t changed.
