Censorship is removing things that are regarded as bad or dangerous. Being an editor is removing things that aren’t up to quality standards, or simply don’t fit the publication’s style… or size. If you cannot distinguish these two concepts, you’re either abysmally ignorant (and I know Rall’s not) or you’re flogging an agenda.
Similarly for cancel culture. Holding people accountable for their behavior at work SHOULD (in the best of all worlds) be the job of their supervisors and the system at work. And in fact, when I was still in the workforce, that’s exactly what happened. But if the company’s focused on the bottom line to the exclusion of all else, then it’s actually perfectly okay for people to vote with their spending money… as I’m sure we’d all agree. And it’s ALSO perfectly okay to make your opinion known to the bosses. Because if it might impact the bottom line, then it matters to them. And if it matters to you, you SHOULD help them understand that it matters to them. So, even though the right wingers are all angsty about “cancel culture”, I think it’s perfectly okay. (well, as long as they aren’t trying to force a business to do something wrong-headed… by my lights… <grins>)
Orwellian is an adjective describing a situation, idea, or societal condition that George Orwell identified as being destructive to the welfare of a free and open society. (Wikipedia so it must be the truth).
To avoid the point of this cartoon would require us not be human, thus is meaningless; unless the point is to show that everyone brings “bias” to the table. This “bias” is called values and attitudes. Until we decide to truly talk to one another and listen, the argument will remain a shouting match as the right will cancel out the views of the left and the left will cancel out the view of the right.
One doesn’t have to be “woke” to comprehend that there are some things that need to be censored and cancelled. Tucker Carlson comes to mind as a prime example. He has proven that he is a lying traitorous enemy of democracy and should have no right to continue spreading his venom. He is a pathetic human who personifies “freedumb” of speech.
Non-collaborative intolerant partisanship must never exceed the bounds of reality/logic and lead to creating rather than solving problems as this will make governing dysfunctional and make the nation vulnerable to attack by its enemies.
Seriously, you’re using the term “woke mob?” You’re going after the left on this? Can I gently remind you of the Dixie Chicks, of DeSantis wanting any blogger who criticizes him to register, of #45 blocking scientists from speaking accurate information, the book-burnings, the removal of books from libraries by Republicans…?
There aren’t cartoonists out here, who lack discernment skills; there’s just people who post drawings and something funny, or not or somehow, maybe pertinent, who can’t discern.
I think he is saying that both sides are equally guilty of those things. Both sides only want their view to be heard. The other side is either Commie or Nazi and must be silenced & destroyed.
I have a problem with “Woke.” It seems to mean whatever the person using it at the time wants it to mean, as Humpty Dumpty explains to Alice that when HE uses a word, it meant what HE wanted it to. “Woke” seems to be an excuse to not face the fact that certain problems actually exist.
Censorship only is forbidden when the government does it. That violates the constitutional right of freedom of speech. Otherwise, editorial decisions not to publish some things are decisions made every day by everyone who controls a printing press or a laserprinter.
“woke”, much like ‘politically correct’, is simply showing consideration for your fellow American. conservatives try to demonize those terms. Do you oppose showing consideration, or just oppose Americans?
History should be accurate. Words have meaning. Correcting history and bringing words back to their true meaning is honesty. It is honesty that corrects the ‘cancel culture’ written years ago.
Needing to come up with new terms seems to be a trait among Millennial/Gen Z writers, who are rewarded for “engagement”, as opposed to thought provoking analysis. Same mindset that’s churning out endless pieces about “quiet quitting”, as if just doing your job well enough to keep it is a new idea.
Woke mob vs grass roots movement depends a lot on which side of the political aisle you sit in.
So if a magazine editor rejects my stories, it’s not because my work doesn’t meet their standards, it’s because the magazine is censoring me! And if I get fired from my job for poor performance, it’s not because I’m incompetent, it’s because my employer is cancelling me!
The WOKE far left has overplayed their hand, true liberals like Ted sees that and he knows the repercussions are coming. That just might be Trump coming back with a vengeance.
Yes, continue producing and using fossil fuels, continue poisoning clean water as if there is an unlimited supply for limitless population growth, continue fantasizing about how we will all ride space ships to some as yet just hypothetical planet which awaits human exploitation. I’m grateful I will not be around when the planet dies. Sure a handful might survive, but a limited genome and toxic wasteland environment might not survive the challenges. Time for everyone to make their peace with a loving god and hope for the best.
So glad Ted called attention to this. And glad he didn’t name names, since he’d probably get cancelled. We’re approaching the stage where it’s “agreed” that there is “wrong” censorship and “right” censorship, and to call it out is impolite.
