No one’s ever sent a probe to another galaxy. That would be extremely difficult to do and would at our current level of technology still take millions of years: https://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/features/cosmic/nearest_galaxy_info.html
Such spartan utilitarianism is nearsighted. Aren’t animal shelters (especially the no-kill kind I prefer) just a waste? What about art (broadly defined)? National parks? The non-applied sciences? Aren’t all of these just a waste of resources from a strictly (and inhumanly) utilitarian standpoint?
Our instincts can get us in trouble, especially if given free rein. But they have some validity and should not be suppressed. Our desire for nature, including domesticated nature pets, gardens, etc.), for creating and enjoying art, for exploring and discovering, are part of our humanity and must not be excised from it just to satisfy the pieties of some etiolated souls.
Light those candles, and let’s see what’s out there!
Point well taken. However, since we are well on the way to making our planet uninhabitable, I guess scientists are looking for another planet to live, and eventually destroy.
Fantastic and philosophical… Why another rover that costs BILLIONS on a planet that has been dead for millions of years and that had already been visited previously by 2 rovers ??? I propose equal division of this money( thrown in the trash ), for shelters for our 4-legged friends, the elderly and vulnerable children. This is money that returns in the form of LIFE !! REPEAT LIFE LOVE !!

It’s always a matter of perspective. If you live in a 3rd world country, an animal shelter is an unaffordable luxury

Humans are animals too. But I hate the word “humankind” because we aren’t.

the space budget pales in comparison to the military budget. think what we could with that if the world would get along.

Good point. Ferdinand and Isabella totally wasted that money they gave Columbus. What has North, Central and South America ever done for us?
