Well, the word “automobile” has been around since the 14th century. It was coined by the Italian painter Simone Martini, although he "never built an automobile but he did draw plans for a man-powered carriage with four wheels. Martini thought up the name automobile from the Greek word, “auto,” (meaning self) and the Latin word, “mobils,” (meaning moving)." A reasonably educated 19th century man could probably figure out what the word means even if they couldn’t fathom how one could exist.
