I’ve seen it bruited that there’s a gene that most people have that lets / forces them to smell the breakdown products of asparagusic acid. If you don’t have that gene, they say, you won’t KNOW that your pee smells weird after eating sparrow grass.

Asparagusic acid is an organosulfur compound with the molecular formula C4H6O2S2. It is found in asparagus and is believed to be the metabolic precursor to odorous sulfur compounds responsible for the distinctive smell of urine which has long been associated with eating asparagus.

Sinus surgery has essentially left me without a sense of smell. During the years I had a second job as a janitor, this was a blessing.

Super Sugar Smacks gave back that way. You could smell those chemicals even standing up. They should charge more for that.

Don’t even mention the end result when one eats octopus cooked in it’s own ink…(and yes, pun intended)

Sorry if I’m missing the joke, but what does any of this have to do with the endocrine system? That is, I know hormones have a role in digestion, but I’m pretty sure it’s ancillary and extemely indirect. Wouldn’t ‘gastroenterologist’ be the word here?

ugh. Back in my bar hopping days my friends were into this shared-shot called a sweet tart. I was not particularly crazy about them, they were mostly just sour mix, but really started to hate them when I realized the affect they had the following morning… umm, err, not entirely dissimilar to panel 2, at least in sweetness.
