People overlook minor transgressions and allow perquisites for those who serve. Hammie was being reasonable even if wrong.

Daddy was on a troop ship returning to the USA from Korea around 1949 when they asked for volunteers to repaint the ship on the way.

Daddy figured it beat boredom so he volunteered for his group. The other members may have wondered about his actions. As soon as they had done a little bit, he pointed out that it would be more convenient to the work if they berthed in the crew’s cabins rather than the ship’s hold with people walking all over each other and sleeping as best they could in hammocks. Done. And eating with the crew rather than the others below. Done. Longer shore leave time when they refueled in Shanghai? Done.

The others came to appreciate his volunteering them.

He’s a good soldier. Points out a problem but will follow orders…..
