I have been in southern and central Michigan in mid-June seven times. Except for a stalled low pressure system in 2019 where it was chilly and damp, the weather was incredibly beautiful, with highs in the low 80s and the lows were in the mid 60s.
The best time-trial racer in our bike club used to say, “If you want to win, ride the outbound half like that’s the entire race; and ride the last half on heart.”
Does the source really matter? Hampsten was the American rider who won the Giro, even after getting lost because the escort motorcycles could not keep up with him down the mountains. Note the hint with ‘he’ in the dialogue bubble.
When do these people ever get anything done if they spend all their time just out running around? (And, I’m presuming, getting their gear together, filling up their water bottles, spending some time in the shower afterward, changing clothes multiple times, taking their pain meds, etc.) I mean, I could see doing all that a couple of times a week, but they talk as if they do this every single day all year round.

A gift you give yourself, with many small but surprisingly difficult little payments in advance.

This runs counter to contemporary American sentiment, where losers should never have tried in the first place.

How about famous quotes from Eddy Merckx?
Ride as much or as little, or as long or as short as you feel. But ride.
Cyclists live with pain. If you can’t handle it you will win nothing.
When it’s hurting, that’s when you can make a difference.
