Zero waste would require him to save the bag (or some other container of his own) and go re-load it from the back of an electric conveyor belt…

We don’t go that far, but we do shop Sams/Costco for things that can work in bulk for us. Not batteries: Their smallest size is a double-lifetime supply. But EVOO, big (plastic) bottles of mixed nuts, a year (or more) worth of vitamins… and at Costco, their loss-leader cooked whole chicken for $4.99 (I think). That one comes with a lot of un-recyclable plastic around it. We just grit our teeth about that part.

I’ve always wondered who looked at cashews and said “I know they’re poisonous, but let me try roasting them first and then eating them.

What gets me is that men’s underwear and socks are sold in Ziplock-sealed bags, but large bags of potato chips aren’t.

I believe the COSTCO size bag is 2 servings.

2,700 calories of cashews is barely the minimum daily requirement.

Are unroasted cashews really poisonous?? I never heard that! However, I’ve also never eaten any.

I agree that, if you’re only sitting at a desk, you could just dump them into a bowl for easy access, but resealability means less spillage if you’re out and about.

I ate most of a bag of cashews once, instead of lunch.

I got a rash and have had to eschew them ever since.

A better target for “outrage” are products like chips which have 15-20% air inside the bag. Plastic, being impermeable, prevents waste due to spoilage, and it is not always feasible to eat all of a package in one sitting. If you buy smaller packages, you easily end up buying more plastic over a relatively short time. No solution is perfect.

It would be unusual for me to eat a whole bag of cashews at once. Then again, it probably depends on the size of the bag, but it looks like he has a bag that would last a week.
