Years ago while backpacking around the world, I found that Americans were equal parts loved and despised. It was a time of awakening for a young naive American.
Victorian British colonialism was NOT all bad. In India they ended the practice of Suttee and Thuggee and their bureaucrats were not half as corrupt and greedy as the native rajahs. In their African possessions they ended cannibalism. They were the first European nation to make slavery and slave trading illegal. The Royal Navy tried to stop slave ships going to the southern U.S. slave states.
