Aw, this one is bittersweet, reliving the end of Peanuts. I really miss Calvin & Hobbes too. Even though it’s reprinted here, it’s just not the same as having a new strip every day. My seven year old found a C & H book recently, so I’ve been reliving the magic through her because she just loves them.
There is a weird multi-layered irony to reading a zombie strip that refuses to lay down lamenting the death of a strip which, ten years later, remains a zombie that refuses to lay down.
Thank you, “Sparky,” for the many wonderful years you gave us with the whole “Peanuts” gang! While I miss having brand new ones to read every day, I’m very thankful I can still find re-runs of your wonderful comic available on the internet … which is really okay with me because even a re-run can feel brand new if it goes back far enough that I don’t remember it from the first time around!
The final daily original Peanuts comic strip was published on January 3, 2000. Peanuts is a syndicated daily and Sunday comic strip written and illustrated by Charles M. Schulz, which ran from October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000 (the day after Schulz’s death),
@WolfEmperor, that sweater is not a “fashion”. The stripes and heart are Cathy’s trademark, the same as the zig-zag on Charlie Brown’s t-shirt in Peanuts.
I am lucky in one respect - I can forget something I’ve read quite quickly. So I can reread a book of cartoons, or even a mystery story, and it’s almost as good as new. It just has a new kind of pleasure that I didn’t get the first time round - “Oh, yes, I remember that now! Isn’t that supposed to be important or something?”
It’s fine if old strips rerun infinitely on the infinite Internet. But at least Cathy Guisewite had the grace to relinquish her scarce newspaper space for some other deserving comic strip to take over. Peanuts online is OK, but Peanuts in the papers is truly the living dead.
(Brenda Starr went out with class yesterday. Would they have allowed Annie to do the same.)
New Year’s 2010 – life without Cathy, Annie, Brenda Starr and how many others threw in the towel last year. Not to mention FBoFW, Calvin – I feel that all the comics I like are out in reruns only (and I am thankful that there are reruns). At least Non Seq is still hanging in there – but how long?

Wait a minute, Cathy is wearing the exact same sweater in 1980, 1990, and 2000! This woman’s fashion is pretty static.
