Today’s believe it or not: Some years ago the local community center brought in a ballroom dance instructor. I was amazed to observe that she was teaching people to waltz using music in 4/4 time. When I asked her about this, she was bewildered. I explained that waltzing works well with 3/4 time, but not at all with 4/4 time. It’s gotta be one-two-three one-two three. She shrugged and said, “But this is the only music I have.”
cue the dark ambient music with discordant overtones which, although broadly tonal, is inflected with chromatic and polytonal passages representing the archetypal example of a florid, melodramatic style without being interpreted as an overly heavy-handed metaphor within the context of the thematic material
I’ve always wondered… why wouldn’t earlier musicians or dancers (I mean like 15th, 16th century, not quite THIS early) not feel a different beat and express it? There are rhythms in nature (like bird calls) that could certainly be reproduced in drumming.

Interesting how none of the women look like Betty Rubble, Wilma Flintstone, or Raquel Welch from “One Million Years B.C.”

When I read this cartoon email idea from Steve, I laughed out loud. It was tricky to draw, but worth it.
