I have never been AFRAID of roller coasters. What is there to be afraid of?
But I have always found the sensation of zero or negative gravity quite unpleasant. I actually like the high speeds and the sharp banked turns, but going weightless as a low hill is crested quickly is not for me. I HATE that feeling. I HAVE ridden several to see if I may start to like them, but never did enjoy it. Obviously drop towers are out of the question. I LOVE high speed acceleration though.
Actually, roller coasters do nothing but coast. They are pulled to the top of a hill then allowed to coast down and around back to the starting point.Yes they also roll.
They coast because you pull them up to the top of a grade, then let them coast down, unpowered. Just because there’s a few loop-de-loops in there doesn’t mean they aren’t coasting.

According to physics, they coast the moment the roll down the first hill.

His fear is not totally unfounded; people have been killed on those.

Yes, the wheels roll, sometimes you will also. Cruise, sure does a the end. Sometimes, depending on the coaster, it does in the start too.

I’ll stick with bumper cars, thank you.

Don’t like ‘em, don’t ride ’em – just means more room for those who do.

In fact, they do.

Yes, they do roll. They also coast. After being powered to the top of the first hill, the rest of the ride is “coasting”.

My favorite roller coaster was Rolling Thunder at Great Adventure (NJ). We must have rode it ten times in one outing. I sure miss those days.

Never thought about that. Why called a coaster? Roller is sort of OK.

OK maybe bumper cars is too much for him, he probably should stick to merry-go-rounds.

They do coast on the downhill portions – for energy conservation reasons, naturally.
