One consideration would be, Ike wouldn’t be the first eponymous possum — that was and forever will be Pogo. However, I frankly can’t think of a better model. So I like Ike, too.
I’d go with the name change. Ike would be more memorable than Back in the Day, since you would associate it with the character. I’d also use the logo for a while to set it in the minds of readers.
I kinda identify with Ike ~ even though I am a cat person ~ so I like it! It’s eye catching. Maybe the Extra Teretsol can visit again when he finds another worm hole. … Anyways, you are stuck with me no matter what you call it.
I’m partial to Back in the Day. It falls in the B list category so I get to read it early in the “Updated today list”. If you change it, it will fall way far down to the “I” list, and not be in my top 10 reads anymore.
Maybe you could change the setting to the Klondike. Then you could call the strip “Klondike Ike”, and your new #1 fan would be Joe’s dad from “Jump Start”.
“aN” extra terrestrial. I would thing proper grammar is more important than the title, though I have wondered why it is titled that – I guess I started following after it’s Jurassic period.

I miss the dinosaurs and volcanos. And a possum worked well for Walt Kelly; here, not so much.

Ha! “I Like Ike!” There’s a throwback! Seriously, tho. “Ike” would be a good name for the strip. Seems relevant to the strip in its current form.

In 1952 I wanted an “I like Ike” campaign button but my parents were for Stevenson, In retrospect I’m happy I didn’t get one.

“I Like Ike” (Eisenhower) was a political campaign song back in the 50s.

Oh yeah, this used to be a comic strip about dinosaurs. But none have put in an appearance in a long time, so the name change seems appropriate.
p.s. Wow, 13 years ago?! Where does the time go?

I like the current characters, and the little alien, too. But I also liked the shark a lot and wish we’d see him now and then.

I see no particular need to rename the strip. But hey, it’s your comic.

“Ike” is still good. or “Cat and Ike” just because it’s easier to say than “Ike and Cat”
