Coming Soon đ At the beginning of April, youâll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
Give it another couple of decades and even Dan will start reaching for words that are suddenly no longer immediately accessible. MIL used the always handy âthingamajigâ and I find myself saying stuff like âthat thing that loosens jar lidsâ. So I figure if I at least remember the function of the âthingyâ, Iâm still mostly functioning too.
Just pick any word thatâs handy. Hmââis this like drawing? Letâs say I want to draw a bench, but I draw a chair instead . . after all, you know what I meant, right?
Amanda, what part of the country are you in? (In Latin America and Spain, we call the knight âthe horseâ and the rook âthe towerâ.) And I hear that in Minnesota, a âwater fountainâ is a âbubblerâ? And who uses âantigogglinâ for âcrookedâ?
In my house, the TV remote is referred to as the schmichik (no idea how to spell that in English). Itâs a Yiddish word that equates to âthingamabobâ or âgadgetâ.
As I live alone except with my cats (yes, Iâm one of those crazy cat ladiesâŠ) I only need to say the words in my head, which turn into pictures of the object I need. The result has been some surprising items that were never before used for that purpose, but so far Iâve survived.

Couples tend to have their own language. Then, you forget and speak it in front of others and they think youâve gone mad. Good times!
