Dr. Google informs me that “sneakers”, “gym shoes”, “athletic shoes”, and “tennis shoes” are basically synonyms — just like “dry-erase boards” and “whiteboards” — but that some tennis snobs will sniff at your ignorance if you refer to their footwear as sneakers.
