A few years ago I woke up with my arm swollen and warm to the touch. I got a same-day appointment at my clinic. My husband went with me (but I drove) since he’s the one that made me get the appointment. I go to a clinic that is part of Duke University’s medical school, so it is an intern that sees me most days. I knew something was bad when he went and got the doctor that runs the clinic. In almost 3 years of going I had never even laid eyes on the man, much less have him look at me. At that time my primary doctor was one of the staff and not a student, but she was off that day. However she happened to be dropping something off and she actually came to check up on me! I miss her so much. Anyway the head guy immediately says, “You’re going to the hospital”. The main one in town is across the street. He was going to do the ambulance but I told him my husband was here. I still drove (seriously I am terrified of my husband’s driving even after 35 years). When the ER did a triage on me they took me back at once. I spent most of the night in the back of the ER. A room opened up at 4am upstairs. Originally I was told I’d be there for a week. I had a DVT in my arm. They said it was a long one. I figured an inch-nope! It started below my elbow and went up into my chest. After I proved I could give myself the shots and since nothing else was happening I was allowed to go home with the condition that I follow up with my PCP. They said I would be on Coumiden for life, but I was off everything after 4 months, except for the aspirin I had been on since a stroke years ago. I shouldn’t have been able to throw a clot while on it. I take full dosage-not child. I also had another stroke in 2021. Weirdly my father was a “bleeder”. I don’t know what kind, but I seem to have the opposite problem.
