Actually, since all the instruments need to be able to be heard throughout an auditorium (or stadium), none of them are really soft-spoken. Even a triangle can double as a dinner bell as needed.

It could be worse I suppose. She might have picked the drums.

My little brother played the trombone in grade school which meant when he got to high school he was tapped to play the sousaphone in the marching band. Being six foot tall also had something to do with it.

Take solace that she hasn’t decided on the Sparkly rainbow edition of “My Timpanis At Home”. But there is still time.

Whatever you do. don’t choose the violin. A badly played one is one of the worst sounds in the world.

Our youngest started off on violin. Next, piano. Next sax. Then trumpet. She stuck with that through marching band in college, then switched to electric bass. Now she’s happy.

I settled on flute for a while, my sister did violin and then trombone – though I suspect trombone was mostly because her school band needed to fill in the brass section.

Have her carry a trombone, in its case around the block. She’ll go with something smaller, but it may be equally loud.

If you’ve heard Johann Strauss waltzes and polkas, there are instruments that duplicate train whistles; horse hoof clopping; and cuckoo bird calls

That choice may lead her to marching band, which can be pretty cool, if your band director has enthusiasm. Or jazz band, also cool.

In my opinion he’s kinda sad because he used to play the bagpipes and he hoped to share his old passion with his daughter.
