Until Fritz Haber developed a way to fix atmospheric nitrogen for fertilizer (and ammunition) food was always scarce, starvation common, only the very few rich could afford to be fat and, yes, people ate bugs.

Fritz Haber is responsible for more people being alive than any other human being in history, and the deaths of more people than any other human being. Despite being Jewish the N@zis gave him an award, his work had allowed Germany to fight WW I despite being cut off from nitrate supplies (and allowed them to start WW II).

I am betting they have Taco Chapulines en Oaxaca. And maybe Tacos Zompopo in Guatemala. In fact: “Zompopos de mayo is a traditional Guatemalan dish of leaf cutter ants. These are the only insects that are consumed in the country. Due to the fact that the ants are seasonal, they can only be found in May during the rainy season.”" Put them in a tortilla and enjoy your zompopos de mayo taco. Add guacamole, tomatoes, peppers, and onions as you like. People also enjoy them in El Salvador. In Mexico, the insects they eat are chapulines."

Termites are mostly protein.. Have a termite salad in a wooden bowl. While you eat the termites they eat the bowl. When you’re done, nothing to clean up!

It’s interesting what people will think of as unacceptable food. There are things on offer in Chinese wet markets that would cause most Americans to shrink back in horror or disgust. I personally would feel terrible eating a former dog, but I’d probably do it if I were starving.

In Jared Diamond’s book Collapse he discusses how the Scandinavian colonists in Greenland slowly perished of starvation because, as real men, they’d only eat land animals that they had hunted themselves, and overhunting had diminished the supply of game. Meanwhile, just offshore in the Atlantic were the richest fisheries on the planet, but fishing was beneath their dignity.

Brilliant, but has anyone actually tried to catch a cockroach? Not easy, I imagine.

I read that 80% of the world’s population eat insects.

I wondered if they’re Kosher? So, I looked them up:

The Torah forbids two types of sherets (creeping things):

Earth crawlers, e.g. mouse, lizard5Flying creeping things,6 with four exceptions: Two types of locust, the cricket, and the grasshopper (translations of the species names vary).7 -Wikipedia

    BTW,

I did not know Newt Gingrich was a sheret, but I do know now.
