How about “unlikely” heading directly toward earth? An asteroid would more likely be moving in an elliptical path/orbit which may cross over earth’s orbital path.
According to google, the asteroid that “killed the dinosaurs” was about 6 miles in diameter. The Vredefort crater in south Africa was formed by an asteroid about 9.3 miles in diameter.
