On the history/invention/evolution of the zipper from Wikipedia:
In 1851, Elias Howe received a patent for an “Improvement in Fastenings for Garments”. It was more like an elaborate drawstring than a true slide fastener.
in 1893, Whitcomb L. Judson patented a “Shoe-Fastening” and is sometimes given credit as the inventor of the zipper. He started the Universal Fastener Company.
In 1909, Gideon Sundback, a Swedish-American electrical engineer, worked on improving the fastener, and he registered a patent in Germany.
A university student was packing her overflowing backpack with her own purchases. She got everything in, except for a baguette and a bunch of leeks, the latter sticking out of her pack through an opening in the zipper.
Reminds me of a Readers Digest joke: A certain private in the US Army supply apparatus was looking through inventory lists for zippers to fulfill a requisition. Failing this, after some little time, he went to the crusty NCO in charge of the depot. “Where are the zippers in the inventory?” he inquired. “They’s in there under the “F’s” heading.” “F? Why is that?” “F is fer, Fasteners, interlocking, slide.”
There’s three ways to do anything: the Right way, the Wrong way, and then there’s the Army Way.

I broke the zipper on my pants today.
Now I’m on a “No Fly” list.

Dad (points at my foot): your sock has a hole in it!
Me (checking my sock): no it doesn’t!
Dad: well, how did you get your foot in?

Why do tv remotes have buttons?
It would be silly for them to have a zipper.

I just couldn’t help myself.
“Your backpack is leaking”.

What’s the difference between a mosquito and a fly?
You can’t sew a zipper on a mosquito.
