Of course, other countries have the same big tech but seem to not have the mental health crisis we have in the US. Maybe it would be better to question the culture in the United States rather than “Big Tech.” I would start with the dysfunctional, education-depriving, book-banning, science-questioning, let’s-bring-Qrisitanity-into-the-classroom, conservatives who seem to be screwing up America ONCE AGAIN.

THe groomers, and their supporters here, want to deny that they seek the corruption and destruction of our children. Be it online or in our schools.

    Well done Goodwyn.

Parenting is the key. I don’t care who you are; a twelve-year-old does not need their own smartphone and unfettered access to the internet.

Al maintains that the cause of mental health problems is the rise in social media. But, I maintain that our mental health crisis is due to cutbacks in spending for mental health. Whenever there’s a mass shooting, mostly Repubs send out a call for more mental health spending, but nothing more gets spent. Now, time was that we spent much more for mental health facilities and mass shootings were rare. Of course, the internet didn’t exist along with social media. So, I can see how some might reason that cutting social media will lead to reducing mental health issues. I think that the rise of social media has had a negative impact on education, not mental health. Regulate social media and we will still have mental health crisis issues to worry about. What we need is investment, like with our infrastructure, in mental health facilities and practitioners.

Big tech is big on donating to the Democrats. And doing all they can to nudge the election to the favor of the Democrats. You really don’t think the Dems are going to lift a finger to hurt big tech, do you?

The people behind Big Tech won’t allow their own children onto their platforms. What does that tell you?

I usually mock Goodwyn for his distorted view of reality, but I will have to give him credit for this one.

Big tech is most certainly a major contributor to the current mental health crisis.

Obviously not the only contributor… it was always a smoldering fire within American culture, and then social media threw gasoline all over it.

For once I fully agree with Al Goodwin. Addiction to tech is a real problem. Children, adolescents lose their grip on reality. Kids with tendency for mental health problems are easy prey and their problems escalate. Big tech acts like the drug dealers of the past, except this is now in our living rooms under the cover of providing tech competences for a future digital generation.
