Planting corn and tobacco in alternating rows to allow the natural pesticides in the tobacco to kill the insects that would prey on the corn. Grinding fish bones into power to use as a fertilizer for the crops being grown.
Planting corn, squash, and beans all together. The corn stalk served as support for the bean vine, and the squash helped keep weeds at bay. As a bonus: cooking all three together into succotash, by some magic of biochemistry, makes them more nourishing than if you cooked and served them separately. Strange, huh?
