Mom left me a note when I was in the hospital. It was in cursive. I read it and asked the nurse to read it to me. I was so proud I’d gotten it all right. I was 6 at the time.
How many adults do you know who can hitch up horse or drive a buggy? Bank a fire or cook on a wood-burning stove? These used to be common skills, but not every skill remains useful forever. Cursive was invented to prevent drips from ink-dipped quills, which haven’t been used in generations.
I remember first learning cursive in 3rd grade. Up until then it had been nothing more than the “secret code teachers used in notes home to the parents.” As we learned and got better at cursive, the teacher started a list of names at one side of the blackboard. Once our cursive was good enough, she added our names to that list, signifying that we were allowed to use cursive for our work in ALL of our subjects. I felt SO grown-up the day I made that list!
I learned cursive before kindergarten and had a running “battle” over penmanship until we changed schools mid-3rd grade. Had to learn to print in drafting class in high school.
I never realized the real reason for connecting all the letters before! Unfortunately too many of our real important documents were written in cursive, because it is very difficult for the younger ones to read… as well as notes from your parents and great grandparents!!

Betcha you can’t tell time on an analog clock either. Older ones can’t drive a stick shift.

They don’t want you reading what colonial separatists said about tyranny.

Cursive is a waste of time. Have the kids learn something useful, not indulge in your nostalgia
