In Iceland, the rule is that the notice is mutual, and depends on how long you’ve worked at the same place. If you’ve worked a month, it’s one week, and increases after that. After a year, you have a three month notice, and after 20 years, it’s up to six months.

my favorite is still “you want 2 weeks notice? in 2 weeks you’ll notice I haven’t been here the last 2 weeks”

Early in the year of 2020, I notified my boss that I would retire at the end of the year. When late November came around, I decided I’m not waiting till the end of December. I put in my resignation effective December 4th. That way I would have insurance paid for from work to last me until my Medicare advantage insurance kicked in starting January 1st.

Give your employer the same respect they give you. If they’re in to giving employees the boot, don’t bother telling them when you intend to leave.

Tabby makes a very valid point. Don’t forget, respect has to be earned.

I got laid off twice, and both times my employers were very generous with the terms and conditions. Of course, I didn’t work in retail.

i delivered pizza as an emergency occupation between ‘real’ employments. When i was hired in late September, i told the boss i’d drive until the first snowfall, and when It snowed one late November day, the day before my shift, & i called to tell the boss to look out the window and to put a driver wanted sign in the window. (i’d also had a successful job interview that day.)

Best job i ever quit! TBH, my boss there was a gold-plated jerk. His live-in girlfriend was the head server at the restaurant. One busy night he sent her out to make a delivery. Some thug tried to grab her as she got out of her car. She escaped & when she got back, his first question was, “So. did you deliver the pizza?”

Trus story! Food service is even worse than retail.

Having a respectful and mutually acceptable exit strategy can certainly pay dividends down the road. But it’s not nearly as much fun.

When I retired, I told my School District Bus driver boss I was giving him a fortnight notice. Got a blank stare for a bit, then he chuckled and tried to talk me out of it. So worth it. Much better than the 1/2 hour notice my telecom corporate job gave me after 25+ years.

today we had a driver call the boss 3 hours into his route and told him he was resigning. At least he brought the truck back (he had to since his car was in our lot)
