That kid is huge and strong. Better check for cracked ribs.

I once had a grape I threw into my mouth slide down and block my windpipe. 100% silence. If you can cough, you can hack it out. A real blockage goes below the cough reflex and there’s nothing you can do except the Heimlick or, as in my case, I bent over to get out of my chair and that compressed my diaphragm enough to blow the grape out of my throat. It was like a popgun.

That’s hard to swallow.

I’m not a medical professional, but have had some basic first aid and CPR training. One thing they taught us about the Heimlich maneuver was to ask the person who is choking if they need help. Of course, if they are really choking they won’t be able to answer, and you’ll have to use your judgment. But it would avoid mistakes like this.

Fortunately for today’s comic, Rupert didn’t understand that part.

Rupert’s just a big sweetie and a hardcore hugger.

Forget the Heinilich Manuveure, just tip them upside down and shake well.

Not sure I could do the Heimlich Maneuver correctly but I know enough to know that if the person is breathing or coughing, they probably don’t need it. Only if they can’t breathe.

Failure to properly administer the Heimlich Maneuver might be considered choking.

Rupert is a pervert. Breaking ribs is acceptable but only in a dire emergency. I had to perform the Heimlich maneuver on my wife several times after she began to lose the ability to swallow.

Geez, lady! Put Rupert back in his cage! :)
