I heard an idea from one of the talking heads on ESPN that made sense. If a player is sitting out a road game due to “load management”, he has to make an appearance before the game for autographs/photos. If the Orlando Magic promoted ticket sales saying Steph Curry and the Warriors are coming to town, and Curry is sitting out, then he’d be available for autographs/photos an hour before the game. If you were bringing your ten year-old to see Steph play, at least they’d get a meet and greet with him.
I wonder what A.C. Green and Cal Ripken have to say about load management. I can guess what Lou Gehrig would have said, him being the luckiest man on the face of the earth.
I’m old enough to remember Wilt Chamberlain. He played every minute of every game, and thus averaged more than 48 minutes per game due to a few overtime games. And the game was more physical back then as well.
Tank, as long as the seats are filled and the concessions are making money, who cares? The big bucks are still in the media rights, and non-arena viewers can’t generally see the big screens unless the camera is pointed at them.
Glad this is a new thing. My only opportunity to see Michael Jordan in person was in the last game of the regular season in 1991-92, vs. the Pistons. Meaningless game for the 66 – 15 Bulls, but Jordan played 39 minutes.

I’ve always wondered athletes do when they’re not in the stadium, endorsing cheesy products or shooting hoops.

In the NBA, games are secondary to the drama.
