Our HS math teacher got pregnant (teaching while pregnant was a no-no for teachers in the 60s in our town) so they hired a Marine to take over. But then they extended his tour… so she stayed for about 6 weeks of the first semester. She had a little beach-toy “inner tube” to sit on. Some of our more… unrestrained… students snuck in and exchanged it for a whoopee cushion. Hilarity DID ensue.
So 50s; in Florida we had the Ol’ Alligator In the Drawer prank. Only worked with imported teachers: native Floridians simply picked it up, threw it out the window and never missed a word. Waste of a perfectly good ’Gator.
If the teachers look older, it’s because they are. Younger teachers aren’t joining the profession because they’re treated so badly these days. Older teachers are clinging on but will be heading for the exit soon. Then what?
Right after HS graduation, I started working as a bank teller, and was on my feet from 9 until 2 except a 15-min break and 30-min lunch. By the third day I had spider veins popping out all over my legs, and I had to start wearing support hose. I can’t imagine how much worse it would be for a teacher.

I’m on my feet all night and I appreciate sitting down on my breaks, but I feel better when I’m up and moving
The real pain comes when I get home and sit down, every time I get up I’m reminded how old I am

Distracts, as in asking endless questions about how she makes those noises.

Shared complaints offer some ease. Mine distract me too, especially the ones that weren’t there yesterday.

Ouch. And I’ve heard that sitting is the new smoking. Just when my muscles and joints make it hard to stand.

Yeah, but then you’re standing on your feet and your legs get tired!!

Even more, I hear her point. And her joints.
