If you prefer, think of it as Northern Dakota Territory and Southern Dakota Territory.

North Dakota and Further North Dakota.

If yer in West Virginia, isn’t the other one Southeast Virginia?

What of you call the mainland part of Rhode Island? Providence?

Germany borders on oceans which technically are both north seas, yet we call one of them the Eastern Sea.

When I lived in South Dakota, we often called it Southern North Dakota.

If you’re in Minnesota, they’d both be West Dakotas —

— North West Dakota and South West Dakota.

How the Dakota Territory was split into the two states in an interesting story.

They should be one state. Combined they have fewer residents than either D.C. or Puerto Rico.
