As an ardent baseball fan, I must say that I’ve always pulled for Pud Reilly. He was a proud member of whatever team he played for.

Even joke-facts about baseball are pretty boring. Which could be the greatest joke of all.

And it’s still not that funny.

Baseball is all about being safe while stealing and all about being safe going home. (George Carlin said it better)

There doesn’t appear to be a Pud Reilly, but there was a Hall of Famer named Pud Galvin (1856-1902). Baseball’s first 300-game winner, and also its first known juicer, as he publicly used Brown-Séquard elixir, which contained monkey testosterone.

When I was very young I was visiting my grandparents over summer break. Around the 4th of July my grandparents threw a party as one of their daughters had a boyfriend whose minor league baseball team was in town. My aunt was at UCLA and living at home as it was cheaper than living on campus. In those days baseball players took second jobs in the off-season to make ends meet. Minor leaguers moreso. Bill had a degree in accounting and was studying for his CPA. He did work for the team and even a few of the major leaguers. Anyway, at the party several members of the big club were also there as Bill was sometimes called up when they needed a bit of help in the bullpen. I was tasked with going around to the players and refilling drinks and stuff. There was also a couple who sat with my grandmother under a big umbrella and chatted away with her. They were dressed in nice clothes, too nice for a party like this, but not over dressed. I spent some time talking with them when not playing waiter. I did not know who they were other than Rachel and Jackie. Very classy people.

Fortunately for Abner, somebody else invented televised golf.

Did Abner Doubleday realize that he actually invented what he wanted to invent?

Babe Ruth was left-handed, the picture shows him pointing into the seats behind home plate.

I lost interest in baseball about 15 years ago. For most of the previous 60 years I was a rabid fan. Fun fact, Pud Reilly and Ty Cobb got into many fist fights on the diamond but off the field enjoyed beating up gay men together,

Hey, baseball is awesome! Going to watch the Reds play the Orioles and Diamondbacks in a week. Now, if they go 0-6, I may agree that baseball is awful. :p

LSD enhances performance? Only that of the imagination, ’cause it really messes up your visual perception among other things. Do not ask me how I know. (Honest, officer, it was just something I read somewhere…)

Well, Wikipedia doesn’t mention any specific racist incidents for Pud, but it does mention the use of monkey testosterone. Ah, the song I remember is probably the one by Irving Berlin.

If you’re too old for dancing

    Get yourself a monkey gland
