People like to criticize football/soccer players who play up their injuries, but I’ve read that they frequently have good reason to do so. Top players are often targeted by opposing players who deliberately try to injure them when the referees aren’t watching and put them out of the game. Their only defense against that is to draw attention to themselves whenever someone does it, even if it means a bit of overacting.
I’ve seen basketball players also taking dives. But in that sport, it’s called flopping. And the only water involved is when their flop sweat is toweled off the floor.
With the advent of video assisted refereeing in most of the major European leagues and tournaments diving is a thing of the past. Almost never happens and when it does the offender gets a card.
