I don’t get it.

She’s talking about medical marijuana, right? They’re in Mississippi where that’s legal but the recreational type isn’t. (I’m in Oklahoma where there’s a head shop on every corner. Uh, I mean medical cannabis dispensary.)

So the story goes 420 was police code for marijuana infraction (back when those things really existed). The high school etc kids picked up on it and appropriated it into their own lingo as in, "I’ll meet you behind the 7-11 after scroll at 4:20

I’m well over 60 and have known lots of marijuana users — in several states and a few different countries, — but this comic is the first time I’ve encountered that idiom.

I believe 4:20 was coined as the time for marijuana indulgers to imbibe related to several factors:

1) The “Hash Bash” rallies that happened yearly since the late 60s at the University of Michigan campus yearly on “Earth Day” (April 20th).

2) To have an “equivalent” to the 5:00pm “Happy Hour” for drinkers, but it started a bit earlier.

Okay, no politics but 4:20 is slang code for dope smoking time and April 20 is a “dope smoking holiday”. Janis is just looking for any “signs”.

I’d be more wary of someone who didn’t get the 4:20 allusion in this day and age.

I disbelieve that changing locations changes your situation, because YOU, which is usually the source of your problems, arrives with you. HOWEVER, in a comic like Arlo and Janis, it opens the comic for further adventures for us readers. But, go or stay, we will be here.

Less common than 420: catnip is sometimes used as slang for pot. Sometimes dried catnip is sold to unsuspecting buyers.

I drove by 2 marijuana stores on May 20 th in lower Michigan and the parking lots were overflowing as I stopped by my friends house nearby and asked him. He said they have a big sale every year 0n 4-20. Oh I said

Why is another word for cannibis necessary? Marijuana is, itself, slang.
