Near the end, my Dad was in a nursing facility because of a stroke. He was 97. One evening I left my Mom’s house and stopped by the nursing home to visit Dad before driving back to my home. The nurse popped in and asked me to help change his diaper. I helped. Walking out I thought “My Old Man was very old school. I wondered about his parenting when I was very young” So I called my Mom and asked if Dad had ever changed my diaper. Mom repeated the question quizzically then said “Oh no, that was always my chore”. I told her what happened and said “Then Dad owes me one.” She had to chuckle.

And even when his brain wasn’t doing its job right anymore and I had become the caretaker, I still looked up to my dad. Miss him so much.

I don’t get to tell my father that I looked up to him…both of my parents died before I was 25…

I am my father’s child by temperament and thought. My middle sister is my mother’s and baby sister (in her 50s now) a combination.

He was not only my dad, but also my boss as I worked for him. Today I spoke with an accounting client of his who I still do income taxes for. It was odd as I generally speak with the fellow’s wife – but she is not well and he called to tell me. This client and his wife are among the clients who when my dad told them I was taking over as he could no longer work seemed to expect a young child to walk in, not a woman in her late 40s. My dad made all his clients feel like family friends and the few who are left still do – they even ask how my mom is.

My husband points out that I lose money every tax season, so I should send them to another accountant – but my dad would not have done so and I will not. To me they are part of my dad and I do what he would have done and working for them makes me feel even closer to him.
