In the early days of over-the-air television the channel tuners didn’t have discrete click-stops. The TV tuners were more like radio tuners and the picture faded in and out as you turned the knob. In between channels you might see a conflation of two pictures, or something like what the Lockhorns are seeing. Some TV’s today with UHF tuners work like that.
