I loved the Sunday Spiff strips when they were first run. I’d hold my hand over the last panels and try to figure out how Spiff’s travails fit into Cal’s real life.
My schoolroom fantasies were more tangible than Calvin’s—I drew horses in the margins of my assignment papers. I got in trouble for it too, but I still love horses, and it did not negatively impact my education (I have a Batchelor’s in Math, and a Master’s in Computer Science)
Calvin is obviously an ADHD child. There is much about my own early youth that parallels what I see and enjoy in this monumentally perfect 10-year adventure, although I was nowhere near as imaginative as Calvin. One of my report cards from 7th grade (age 11) had a note from science class – even my favorite subject – that read, “The Old Wolf has done little homework, has kept no notes, and pays very little attention in class. He gets lost in his own thoughts, or some plaything or other during most of our class discussions.” Over 60 years later, I still struggle with focus.
Spaceman Spiff was my favorite character in this strip. It was always a special treat when such an intrepid explorer came to life to battle the evils of responsibility!

Only Spaceman Spiff could turn D.i.s.a.s.t.e.r. into a victory.

Well, Calvin getting something right in school is a rarity and probably should be celebrated when it occurs.

Even when he is paying attention he isn’t!

Sounds like Spaceman Spiffs spaceship mechanics are as bad as his robotic skills……

I like how the goggles change to reflect Calvin’s feelings.

Amazing what happens in but a moments speck of time of reverie, like The Twilight Zones “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”

I’m not a believer in cold calling on students. Let the ones who actually want to answer be the ones to do so.
