    Purgatory, Maine: One of America’s oddest town names; Purgatory TX abandoned by the early 1900s the only remaining structures there now is the cemetery

    Frank Morgan (the Wizard of Oz) narrated a radio episode of Cavalcade of America where various people described how their towns got their names. I think Purgatory was one; it’s been a while. I see it’s on youtube, if you search for names on the land cavalcade . It’s an interesting half-hour.

    Listen to Dan St. Paul’s comedy bit Heaven vs Hell baseball game. It takes place at Purgatory Field. It is hilarious.
