One of the better Thanksgiving feasts I’ve ever thrown (with help) was when I invited “come one come all” to my co-graduate students with no accessible family to eat with. In the 1980s. I built benches and put plywood on saw horses, and everybody pitched in by bringing something… much of which was far from traditional American Thanksgiving food. I supplied the turkey and several pumpkin pies. We had a GREAT time chatting and learning about other cultures.
If you have a military base near you, they often have a program where you can invite a service member who can’t get home for the holiday to your dinner. Here in San Diego, we have lots of Navy and Marine personnel who can’t go home and are invited into the community.

“Ernie, you can sit in Joan’s place.”
Actually, my mother enjoyed taking in strays on Thanksgiving. It was a good thing.

Never discourage her from engaging with men. That’s how you’ll get that barnacle out of you house.

Ha! I heard on the radio the other day, “Don’t be the chips guy.” I’m bringing wine and flowers.

Val, say NO. I know that you don’t know what that word means, but just use it and get a backbone.

There’s always room for one more, according to my mother.

The point is, Joan didn’t let her sister know until the food was on the table and they were ready to sit down!
