Scientists have been known to make dubious claims. And scientists contradict each other. Especially scientists who are being paid by a company to conduct research. I read an article in a scientific magazine that conducted a poll amongst scientists concerning fraud in research. A considerable percentage of respondents reported being pressured to skew the results of their research towards the direction of the desired goals of the sponsor of the research, even “fudging” data towards that end.

Since nobody has counted how many grains of sand there are or how many stars there are, both are just rough estimates. All you can say with certainty is that a rough estimate of the number of stars is more than a rough estimate of the number of grains of sand. Of course, it doesn’t sound as convincing if you put it that way (i.e. honestly).

Seems like they’re making vast claims using half-vast data

the universe might not be half-vast, but there are plenty of half-vast things in the universe

They’re both just approximations, order of magnitude estimates. And there are uncountably more stars than grains of sand. Now, if it were all the grains of sand on all the beaches on all the planets in the universe, then I’d estimate the sand wins.

They are right until they get to the sand in California. They would be over the number if they counted those too. Prove me wrong!

Counting stars is a mug’s game. Selling “naming rights” to one of those countless stars is a business.

    Don’t you know

That you are a shooting star

Don’t you know, don’t you know

Don’t you know that you are

    A shooting star

And all the world will love you

Just as long, as long as you are
