I really think I ought to be opposed to all this making fun of Vance for something we all agree absolutely never happened. The reason I find it hard to be upset about it is that such a huge proportion of Republican political campaigning has for decades consisted of outright lies. And even the “good” Republicans who never joined in lies never tried to tamp them down, either. Almost as if they realized that nationwide campaigning on the actual effects of the actual policies of the two parties was not going to put many Republicans in office.
