Yeah after dealing with years of outages we decided to have a 50 amp service installed in our home with a 13 k generator it powers the entire house furnace ac fridges and all the light since I bought a portable total cost was around 2 grand .
Wow, Brutus, I was impressed with your thoughtful, intelligent conversation. Until your last panel…..I love the way Uncle Ted is looking out sideways at us.
We are fortunate to live in a town with its own power company. In the 20 years we have lived here we have rarely had outages and the ones we have had have been less than 3 hours and usually no more than 1/2 hour. Only once did we have a longer one which was for 12 hours, and that was because 2 of the 3 feeder line were down (Those big power companies don’t invest in tree trimming). The crews busted their butts rewiring to get the entire town back up on the one remaining feeder line. Many of the surrounding towns had outages for 2 – 3 days.
Last major storm only made the power blink. Just had my generators yearly service done. It had to be delayed a month because my many who lost power now wanted generators.
Always nice to see Uncle Ted. He gets the week started right! But better include the frig in that group if you are going to want cold beverages to enjoy while watching the game.
Now you’re thinking Brutus. But Gladys’ might have other thoughts about powering up. You can get 20K Generator that would fire up all your needs. But power cords every where. Can get Generator hooked into home power that will come on auto when power goes out. Cost lost but keeps family safe and sound during really bad weather. 1996 I had a little 5000 watt generator I used to use on masonry jobs. Hurricane knocked out power for 9 days. Little Generator kept my sick Wife, mom, 9 year old son and 90 year old Aunt next door going. I got me 12K after that. cords is only problem. All my family gone now so I can rough it. Just refrig, microwave, cable for tv, computer and small AC.
Many years ago we had a regional power outage. The back up generators at all the big box stores kicked in, ran for 4 – 6 hours and ran out of fuel. None of the gas stations in a 100 mile radius had power, so they all shut down. Man makes plans and the gods laugh.
Good choices Brutus but l would add the refrigerator on it also so that all your food doesn’t spoil. Then again, you could cook all that food in one gigantic bar-b-que and have a feast……
We once had a storm that knocked out the power for 3 hours. It turned out that it was just our street and the street behind us that got the power back so quickly. The rest of the town had power out for a week. It was like in the Twilight Zone at night. Our two streets had lights and everywhere else it was dark.
Over the last 20 years or more, I have only had one power outage. It was during the worst of the winter, I had a dog here I was sitting for plus my two at the time (3 who would have to go outside regularly) and I was a bit nervous. I called the owner of the spare dog, and let her know what was going on, since her home locally was out, too. After grabbing flashlights, candles, etc, the power was back on in 5 minutes. We have had some very intense and powerful storms this year, and no outages. Our lines are buried, as they were in my last home.
Houstonian here. During Hurricane Beryl this past July, I was without power for 6 days. It was so hot and humid in my house, that my phone shut off due to “water in the charging port.” I had a small generator that powered a fan, a charging station for my phone and backup batteries, and my refrigerator. I live alone and have several medical issues. It was hard for me to get the generator started due to bad shoulders. If it shut off, I had to wait for my daughter or SIL to come over to pull the cord. I am now waiting on the installation of a whole-house generator. I DO NOT want to go through that again. My dog and 2 cats don’t either!
I have a 3Kw propane one for my computer and ham shack because I am as OES (official emergency station for ARES). I have three 100 foot extension cords to reach anything else in my trailer when necessary.
How ironic that this storyline appeared in my cartoon favs today. Last week we had our first estimate for a back up generator and tomorrow the second company comes to give an estimate. We are definitely doing it before winter.

Gotta keep yourself distracted from situations like that.

I’d add the refrigerator for some cold snack: ice cream, for example.

The refrigerator, if it has an ice machine. A power outage caused mine to seize up.

I always worry about getting stuck in my power recliner. That’s why I keep spare snacks where I can reach them.

I’m glad Ted didn’t say “hot water heater”. That’s redundant.

The only time we lost power was when one of the local gypsies blew himself up… stealing electricity… Power was down about 20 minutes…

I have a Generac. We get lots of snow here, so it comes in handy in winter. BTW, I like the priorities Brutus has.

If the power is out, wouldn’t the cable be out too?

There might be some family disagreements about what gets power, so you might as well get a generator that powers everything.
