Or … once you break off a piece to eat it with your fork, it becomes two pieces. You then eat that piece and it becomes one piece again. Break off another piece = two pieces. Eat it = back to one piece.
And, in one sense, technically, once you eat an entire cake with a fork, you have zero pieces = no pieces (left).
