I’m disappointed. Calvin waited an eternity for the beanie. He’ll have to wear it unpowered now. What if Moe sees it? How will Calvin get away without a motor?
These cartoon strips are so old, they were at at time before we had all this cheap junk from China. Maybe India or Japan, but not China. Still funny, however.
Calvin is me when I was little. I would have poured a ton of Testor’s plastic cement all over the beany to hold the broken shaft in place. Then it wouldn’t work and it would like like garbage, but the fact that I built it myself would overshadow any imperfections.
Reminds me of the submarine I spent weeks building. It was supposed to really work under water. I carefully followed the instructions, using rubber cement and all. When launch day came, I put it in the swimming pool and it went streight to the bottom and never came up. I never trusted advertisers again.
Concur with Pamlicorat - Calvin’s dad only knows legal matters. Whenever Calvin asks him something technical, he comes up with fantastic, ridiculous explanations. Example: Calvin asks (if I remember correctly) where the sun goes when it sets. Dad: “Arizona. That’s why all the rocks there are so red!”.
Shall I blow the punchline to this series?
Calvin finally fixes the beanie, puts it on, powers it up, stands there and says something to the effect of “Strange. I don’t seem to be lifting off…”, get’s mad because the beanie does not perform to is outlandish expectations, throws/kicks the beanie, Hobbes makes a introspective character comment and they both, then, have more fun with the box that the beanie came in.
Actually pamlicorat they do know him. If I remember correctly there are only 2-3 more strips in this storyline and Dad does figure in one of them. The end results are predictable, but I’m not the type to spoil things for people. Just enjoy. This comic strip is timeless and possibly the best comic series ever made. It’s certainly in the top 3 anyway.
I was thinking along those same lines - Calvin’s dad is a patent attorney, so you would expect him to have a pretty good background in science/engineering. On the other hand, his classic explanation about the sun and Arizona leaves one wondering… maybe he couldn’t hack it in engineering, so he went to law school?
or maybe he just likes messing with Calvin’s head? }:>
@davidf42 -
was that the submarine that needed a pill of some sort to make it surface after diving? I always wanted one (or at least to know how it worked…) but considering your experience, maybe I was better off without… sigh…
I tried Superglue for my brother’s paperback bookbinding. Apparently it doesn’t stick to other glue. It sticks fingers together well, though, which is really good if you want quasi-webbed hands.
Dads sometime can fix things, be nice to Dad Calvin.
And stop insulting Tigers.
Susan 001 The answer I think is they dont want to seen as happy or enjoying themselves .
One of the reasons I love reading the comic comments is that most people stay away from politics and religion. Let’s allow innocence in this little space.
No problem here; Calvin just needs to scarf down some more boxes of Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs, send in the boxtops, and wait ANOTHER six weeks. Piece of cake.
Lewreader said: “And for a limited time only, replacement propellers may be purchased just $4.95 plus S&H. Please allow 6 weeks for delivery.”
I don’t think it’ll be as easy as $4.95 plus s/h … he’ll probably have to eat yet another 2 or 3 (maybe more!) boxes of Chocolate-Frosted Sugar Bombs plus wait another 6 long, frustrating weeks for delivery before he can get his replacement propellers (or whatever he broke)!
If this had been me, my father would have put it together for me properly and carefully, then put it up on a high shelf where I couldn’t reach it because all I’d do is break it.
Hey, GnasherSlasher -
since you asked yesterday (and you said you visit daily), it’s about time someone let you know it’s not just Singapore where a newspaper may print the syndicated comic strips.
Since they were all drawn in the 1980s and 1990s, any particular strip may appear at any time, depending on when they start the sequence. GoComics will thus be out of sync with a lot of strips. (GoComics is often out of sync even in posting brand-new strips, since some syndication deals involve a few weeks of delay, or on the other hand a few weeks of exclusive rights for preferred outlets.)
It makes it more fun to see the variety - but it makes it harder to follow a story “arc” if you travel between cities that publish different parts of the archive!
zev.farcus -
I remember that little submarine too. It was powered by baking soda if I remember right. But the one I was talking about was a scale model, about a foot and half long, had an electric motor and moving fins.
